So on Saturday we made a trip a couple of hours away to enjoy a family lunch with our adoption agency. They do such a wonderful job of getting us together a couple of times each year: in May for a picnic, and again in November for a catered lunch. It is always so nice to see friends new and old, love on the new babies and the chunky toddlers, and anticipate with others when their placements will be!
Stacy is a very sweet gal that I met at our fall training last year. She and her hubby had the joy of bringing this cutie home in May!
Gretchen was a birth mom counselor when we were waiting for placement. She gave me lots of encouragement while we waited, and I know she was praying for us, Peanut, and Peanut's birth family. She now has her own little priss to love on, born in July. Wish I had gotten a photo of her as she is always decked out in bows, feathers, animal prints, you name it! :)
This is Doris, she and her husband Jim started our adoption agency 30 years ago. Doris is the one that meets with all the couples as they go on the waiting list, and she is usually the one who makes the call when a birth mom wants to meet a couple, or in our case when there is a baby at the hospital ready to go home with a family. She has become very dear to me over these two years. Peanut was feeling pretty worn out at this point so there were no smiles to be had!
I thought this was pretty precious!
Okay so onto the good news...
On Monday we get to make a little road trip to finalize Peanut's adoption! Every November several different places have National Adoption Day, a time for the courts to open up to families who are eligible to finalize adoptions. This was set to be on November 19, a date we already had a commitment. But on Saturday we found out it had been changed to the 21st which means we can go! THIS tells you a little about the day.
Okay, so the question we get when we tell friends about this is "What? Wasn't the adoption final when your legal risk period was over?" No, it wasn't. By law, the agency retains legal custody and we have physical custody until our post-placement visits with our social worker have been completed. Our third and final one was on October 5th, so after that it is just a matter of paperwork. Formalities. In our state, you do not have to be in court for finalization. Most couples get their adoption decree in the mail. But folks eligible to finalize have the option of going on Adoption Day to have the judge sign and hand them their decrees. Think fabulous photo ops!
Looking forward to posting photos and details about that day here!
